The Scott County Soil and Water Conservation District
(SWCD), founded in 1953, is a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia whose boundaries are the same as those
for Scott County. The District is governed by a
five-member Board of Directors. Three of these members are elected in the November general election to four-year
terms and two are appointed by the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Board. One of the appointed
directors, by state mandate, is a Virginia Cooperative Extension Service Agent. The District is also assisted
by one Associate Director. The District has three full time employees, an Executive Secretary, Conservation Specialist
and Agricultural Conservation Technician. All Scott County citizens can have a voice in resource and conservation planning by attending monthly board meetings, communicating their concerns and participating in District programs. Scott County SWCD is involved in a wide range of programs encouraging community participation in conserving and protecting soil, water, and other related natural resources. These programs are supported by Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation – Division of Soil and Water Conservation, Scott County Board of Supervisors and technical support from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and other partners. Our purpose is to give local citizens the ability to work on conservation problems at a local level. We want to help provide the necessary technical expertise to assist the community in identifying, discussing and solving local conservation issues. Our community constituents are farmers, homeowners, developers, teachers, youths, local businesses, agencies and other residents interested in conservation. We hope to serve all citizens of Scott County.
VISION STATEMENT To assist and educate all citizens to become better stewards of land and water resources, thereby preserving natural resources for future generations. MISSION STATEMENT To promote responsible natural resource management by providing educational assistance and technical support to citizens, municipalities, and other agencies.
